THE BEAUTY SPOT : How to spot if your make up has expired

I got asked at work recently, how long can you keep make-up for until it goes off? Well the answer got me thinking about what are the suggested lengths of time? First off, make-up is like food and once it allows bacteria in - it can go off and bacteria filled sponges or products can cause spots, infections and other nasty things. So here is a small run down of expiry dates for your make-up!

Expiration dates — beginning from the time you first open these products
Powders and shadows: 2 years
Cream shadows: 12 to 18 months
Foundation: 1 year
Lipstick & lipliner: 1 year
Mascara & eyeliners: 3 months
Makeup brushes: Clean weekly using a mild detergent *
Makeup sponges: Replace weekly, or when sponge becomes soiled

* A lot of women think this is easily done with soaking the brush in water. While that might clear off any product that lingers on the brush. It may not clean all the nasty bits lurking in the bristles. I normally clean mine using MAC brush cleaner. Its about 12 euro a bottle and it lasts ages. If your using your brushes on other people I would suggest using the cleaner a lot sooner then weekly!!!!
— Smell your cosmetics; if they have an unusual odor, they may contain bacteria and should be discarded. This is particularly true if you have bought fake cosmetics - the horrific smell off them should be enough to convince you never to put it near your face!!!!

— Always make sure that products are closed tight and stored out of sunlight, as this can destroy the preservatives.

— Don't use any eye products if you currently have an eye infection. I hate to say it but throw out anything you have used if you have an eye infection because if you use it again - then your just going to keep re-infecting yourself.

— Use clean sponges or brushes. I can't stress that enough - you would not believe the state that people allow their brushes to get into! It takes five minutes to properly clean a brush and in doing so you have prevented yourself from wiping bacteria all over your face and eyes. Shudder!

— If there are any changes in color and texture, dispose of the product immediately. I have seen foundations that changed color from light to salmon pink and lip balms which have literally been a pool of grease after a while. If it changes - get rid.

— Avoid sampling makeup at department stores when possible. If you do test, never apply directly from the makeup. Instead, use a clean, disposable applicator to apply cosmetics. Most cosmetic counters have little applicator brushes for you to use. This is because thousands of women a week try on the products. So if you pick up a lipstick to try it on - take five minutes to ask someone to pop it on for you. You could be saving yourself a lifetime of cold sores for doing so. It doesnt mean you have to buy the product  - but it does mean that you get your make up done!!!
